The Academic Board (AB) is the academic governing body at Sydney Met, reporting to the Governance Council (GC) through its Chair. It is responsible for overseeing and monitoring the Institute’s academic activities and for advising the GC on academic matters. The AB holds delegated powers and responsibilities across a range of academic functions, including course development, accreditation, teaching and learning, benchmarking, academic quality assurance, academic integrity, and academic risk management. Operating independently from the GC, the AB ensures its advice on academic issues remains objective and well-informed. To support its work, the AB has standing committees, subcommittees, and working groups as needed.
The Academic Board (AB) has four standing committees:
The Research and Scholarship Committee (RSC) is a standing committee of the Academic Board at Sydney Met, responsible for all academic matters related to research and scholarship. Appointed by the Academic Board, the RSC reports directly to it. The RSC fosters a culture of research excellence, upholds ethical standards, and promotes scholarly activity across the institution. It provides recommendations to the Academic Board on research and scholarship initiatives, including the identification of priority areas and the development of strategies to support and resource these activities.
The Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) is a standing committee of the Academic Board at Sydney Met. It provides advice and makes recommendations on operational planning, policy development, and quality assurance related to teaching and learning, assessment practices, and the overall student experience. The TLC is responsible for overseeing the quality of teaching and learning across all educational environments and for promoting student welfare. It plays a key role in ensuring that academic standards and the learning experience remain consistently high.
The Board of Examiners (BoE) is a subcommittee of the Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) and reports directly to it. The BoE convenes each trimester following the scheduled release of student results. The BoE is responsible for reviewing student results to ensure that learning outcomes are achieved in a fair, accurate, and consistent manner.
The Student Experience Subcommittee (SES) is a subcommittee of the Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) and reports directly to it. The SES is dedicated to enhancing the overall student experience, encompassing academic, social, and extracurricular dimensions. The subcommittee focuses on understanding and improving key stages of the student life cycle to foster a supportive, engaging, and enriching environment for all students. It oversees student communication, engagement, events, and enrolment, and provides regular reports to the TLC.
The Course Advisory Committee (CAC) is a standing committee of the Academic Board at Sydney Met. It provides expert advice on the development of new higher education courses and the enhancement of existing accredited programs. The Academic Board established the CAC to support course development and accreditation processes, including the review of programs approaching re-accreditation. The Committee plays a key role in ensuring academic offerings remain current, high-quality, and aligned with institutional standards and strategic priorities.
Sydney Met's campus is located on the unceded territory of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, who are the traditional owners of the land where the campus is situated. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present, and emerging. We extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia and Indigenous peoples globally who are presently studying, working, or contributing to Sydney Met.
